I can't believe it's November already! The school year is flying by. We have been so busy this year and before we know it, it will be time for Winter Break.
Last week we started our study of food and nutrition. We read the book 'Eating the Alphabet" by Lois Ehlert. The book depicts fruits and vegetables for every letter of the alphabet. We also read the book "The Cake that Mack Ate." The children made a list of all of the fruits and vegetables they knew. I was impressed by some of the things they came up with. You may be wondering why we are always making lists or recording the things we know or learned. This helps children learn the purpose for writing and they are seeing writing being modeled for them. The children are also learning answer questions and predict or recall. All of this listing and chart making is related to our state standards and they are also skills the children will use later in school. You can check out the state standards by clicking on the link:

The afternoon class had a visit from a parent who is a Dietitian. She helped the children sort fruits and vegetables and talk about healthy foods. The children really enjoyed this and learned a lot.
This week we are continuing our study of food. We are reading the book "Gracias, The Thanksgiving Turkey." The children have also been working on weaving place mats for our Thanksgiving Celebration next week. We are hoping to complete a few more Thanksgiving crafts including a paper plate turkey if we have enough parent volunteers. New works this week include; name tracing, food sorting, and food matching. I will also be introducing the continent map as well as continent tracing.
Your child will be bringing home a paper feather to cut out, write what they are thankful for, and decorate. We will put these feathers on a large turkey in the hall. Feathers will be sent home on Monday next week.

Happy Halloween
This week we finished up our study of Fall. We read the book "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" and used felt story props to help tell the story. This book has a great predictable and repetitive text with motions to go along with it. The felt story props and the book were put on the shelf for the children to use during work time. Many of the children enjoyed retelling the story using the props.
We also started "Alphabet Exercises" this week. This activity takes place during our group meeting. The children review the letters we have covered during our letter of the week lessons. The children look at a large picture card and say the letter name (arms up over head), letter sound (arms on shoulders or making the tactile cue for the sound), and name the picture (touch toes). This gives children a change to practice letter names and sounds and associate them with a movement. The state standard related to this activity is for preschool students to learn some letter names and sounds in addition to those in their first name by the end of their preschool experience.
The Get It, Got It, Go! assessment of early literacy skills was also given this past week by our itinerant preschool teacher, Ms. Alicia. This state assessment looks at children's skills in the areas of picture naming, rhyming, and alliteration (words that begin with the same sounds). This timed test is given in the Fall and Spring to all preschool students. The children are asked to do rapid picture naming (1 minute), rhyming (2 minutes), and alliteration - words that begin with the same sound (2 minutes). The number of correct responses is recorded. I also use this information and information from the beginning of the year screening, baseline testing, and observations to complete your child's progress report. I look forward to discussing your child's progress at conferences during the next 2 weeks.

All About Apples
This week we learned all about apples. Thank you to everyone who sent in apples. The children listed (and I recorded) all the things we know about apples. They came up with some great ideas! Each child peeled their own apple and added it to the pot to make applesauce. We followed a picture recipe to make the applesauce. On Wednesday, the children tasted apple pie, applesauce, apple slices, and apple juice. Then, we made a bar graph to show our favorites. Apple pie was the winner in the morning and afternoon classes. We counted the names in each column and discussed which one had the most and least names. Popular works this week include; pumpkin hammering, torn paper jack-o-lantern, Mat Man building, drawing with dry erase markers at the easel, shaving cream and corn cob tweezing. This week, we drew Mat Man for the first time. The children will draw Mat Man once a month and the drawings will be collected in their portfolios to show progress.
We will continue with additional apple works next week and also talk about pumpkins. We might even have pumpkin "guts" in the touch table one day.
Thank you to all the parents who have been volunteering in the classroom. The children enjoy the 1:1 time and the chance to work on special projects.

Trees, Trees, Trees
This week we continued our study of trees. We read several books including; The Apple Pie Family, Who Lives in Trees, and Trees Count. We also started learning Yoga this week. First we practiced our breathing while laying on our back with our hands on our bellies. We also learned "Tree Pose." The children pretended their toes were the roots of the tree and pushed them down into the ground to help them balance. We will be practicing Yoga throughout the year. Pumpkin punching (the children use a push pin to punch out the outline of a pumpkin) has been popular this week. This work develops concentration and coordination (fine motor skills). Mat Man was also introduced this week. Mat Man is part of the Handwriting Without Tears program and teaches body awareness and fine motor skills.

Another popular work this week has been pumpkin hammering. The children are using a (real) hammer to pound golf tees into a pumpkin and then use pliers to pull the tees out again. The children have also been very interested in making leaf pattern headbands. When children complete this work, they are doing more than gluing shapes and making a hat, they are working on developing patterning skills needed for reading and math.
HOMEWORK...
*Bring an apple or apples on Monday or Tuesday. We will be making applesauce on Tuesday. We will also be tasting red, green, and yellow apples next week. We are also hoping to taste apple pie. Please let me know if you are interested in sending in an apple pie.
*My Book of Leaves - A leaf book will be sent home in your child's folder next week. Take time to complete and read this book together. No need to send it back to school, but I hope you will take the time to work with your child on this book.
*Help your child practice putting on and zipping his/her coat.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Last week we read the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom." We did a read aloud, listened to a recording of Ray Charles reading the book, and listened to the book in a song. Then, the children helped re-tell the story. The children have also been helping "build" a trunk for a coconut tree. The children are gluing the letters of their name onto a strip of brown paper. Then, the teachers are taping these strips to the wall to create the trunk of the tree. Next week, the children will begin cutting our leaves and coconuts for our class tree. We have also been practicing a finger play about pumpkins.
Homework...
*Bring an apple or apples to school on Monday 10/21. We will be making applesauce and also using the apples for other projects.
*I will occasionally send home booklets or activities for you and your child to do together at home. You do not need to send the activities back to school unless directed to do so. The activities are meant to enrich your child's learning and build a bridge between home and school.

Fingerprinting takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:45-3:45 at the Board Office. It usually takes 2-3 days for fingerprints to come back. There is no cost for fingerprinting. Fingerprints are good for one year.
*Cold Weather Arrival and Dismissal - cooler days will be here soon. When the weather is cold, I will not be propping the classroom door open during arrival/dismissal (to keep the heat in). There is a sign in the window that says "Enter through the office" or "Please come in." The door will be unlocked during arrival and dismissal when the sign is green and says "Please come in." During this time, please open the door and let your child in. When you drop off your child, please be sure to make eye contact or wait for the teacher to greet your child. We want to make sure that each child is acknowledged and accounted for from the minute they arrive until the minute they go home.
*Early Release - District Early Release days do not apply to preschool. We follow our regular schedule.

Trees, Apples, Pumpkins, and more...
This week we began our study of trees. We read the books "A Tree for All Seasons" and "A Tree Named Steve." Many of the children made a leaf collage by snipping a gluing paper. The art shelf was very popular this week. The bead stair was also introduced this week. Many of the children enjoying exploring this counting work. An extension to this work where the children color a bead stair was also popular. This work later leads to addition and multiplication.
Each week, we will spend time as a class learning about a specific letter. This week's letter was S. Some ways that we will explore each letter include, Sandpaper letter, beginning sound basket that contains various objects that begin with the sound, writing the letter on the dry erase board, and an interactive computer activities. Children will continue to work on various letters through Sandpaper letter lessons and moveable alphabet.
We have also been enjoying some of our new playground toys and more toys will be arriving soon. So far, the bikes and pipe builders seem to be the most popular items. We also have an obstacle course, hoppity balls, chalk, basketball hoop, and hula hoops.
We will not be having a Halloween Party in our class. Instead, we will have a food celebration in November, close to Thanksgiving. More information will be sent home in November.

This number is used to calculate how much money the district will collect. Approximately 50 percent of the budget comes from state funding.

Fall is Here!
I don't know about you, but I'm so excited that fall is here... cooler weather, apples, pumpkins, and fall colors are great!
This week we read more "Pete the Cat" books. We also had water beads in the touch table which were very popular with all the children. They enjoyed exploring the colors, texture, and ways the beads move. Some children have been introduced to sandpaper letters. The purpose of sandpaper letters is:

If your child comes home with letters written on his/her arm, those are the letters sounds that were learned or practiced that day. The picture dictionaries will have a few pictures for each letter/sound a child has been working on to reinforce beginning sound awareness.
The practical life area continues to be very popular with the children. For October, I will be putting fall related works, including some art projects, on the shelves in all areas of the classroom. In October, we will be studying trees, leaves, pumpkins, and apples. We are in need of all kinds of fall items including pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, apples, and pressed leaves. You may send in these items at any time. If you have good play-doh recipe, we could also use some cinnamon scented and pumpkin pie scented play-doh.
Cold and flue season has started already. We try very hard to keep the children healthy at school and help them learn healthy habits such as hand washing, covering your cough, and other good hygiene procedures. Please help everyone at school stay healthy by keeping your child home if he/she is sick. Guidelines for when to keep your child home were sent home last week. If you are unsure, feel free to call or email.
REMINDERS...
*Count week is October 7-11.
*If you are late for preschool, you need to enter through the front of the building and get a tardy slip from the office. Preschool officially starts at 8:20 and and 12:15. I take attendance after I close the classroom door at 8:26 and 12:21. If you see that the door is closed, please make sure you get a tardy slip from the office. When I take attendance on the computer, I am only able to mark the children absent or present, the office has to change it to tardy. If you do not get a tardy slip, your child will be recorded as absent for that day (I do not have the ability to change the attendance once it is entered into the computer).

Ohio school districts are required to count their students and submit that
information to the Ohio Department of Education. This number is used to
calculate how much money the district will collect. Approximately 50 percent of the budget comes
from state funding.
If your child is tardy or out ill, PLEASE send a DR.
NOTE or PARENT NOTE to document their absence.
*If you are late for preschool, you need to enter through the front of the building and get a tardy slip from the office. Preschool officially starts at 8:20 and and 12:15. I take attendance after I close the classroom door at 8:26 and 12:21. If you see that the door is closed, please make sure you get a tardy slip from the office. When I take attendance on the computer, I am only able to mark the children absent or present, the office has to change it to tardy. If you do not get a tardy slip, your child will be recorded as absent for that day (I do not have the ability to change the attendance once it is entered into the computer).
*Montessori Parent Info Night - Thursday October 24th, 4:30-5:30 PM in our classroom. Flyers will be sent home soon. I will be giving a general overview of the Montessori Philosophy, description of the different areas in the Montessori classroom, show a few works, and answer questions.
